Publishing

We have advised publishing houses, (bestselling) authors, publishers, editors, and literary agents for many years on the complex legal questions arising in this area – from manuscript preparation through to book tour.  We are at home with all types of genres –non-fiction and specialist texts, fiction, illustrated books, children's books, biographies, audio books and e-books.

In that context we work with our clients to develop both established and innovative content models and commercial opportunities to deliver the "written" word to readers and users in digital format, from the now established E-book (enhanced or otherwise) via multimedia text exploitation through to the social media contributions of publishers and authors. Our service naturally includes all-important book-related and ancillary rights such as film rights, merchandising, and theatrical and musical exploitation rights.

Our firm's contact partners are engaged in the subject not only as attorneys and legal representatives.  They are also directly involved as professionals - as experts, mediators or independent publishers.  As just one example, they advise the North German State branch of the German Booksellers and Publishers Association.  Their delivery of over fifty speeches on publishing law and neighbouring legal fields to publishers, authors, literary agents, translators and book production specialists at various book fairs demonstrates the strong connection between acting as a legal representative and advisor on the one hand, and taking part in practical legal activities and exchanges of views within the industry on the other.

Teaching enhances these activities: the founding partners of the firm have many years of experience as lecturers in the subject of "Copyright and publishing law" at the University of Hamburg.

In addition, Alexander Unverzagt is a long-standing member of the Advisory Board of the Literaturbrücke, Berlin and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Literaturwerkstatt (Literary Workshop) Berlin.
